Shanghai, during the vibrant eight-day Spring Festival holiday, witnessed an unprecedented surge in tourism, showcasing remarkable growth and a dynamic cultural atmosphere.
A staggering 16.7595 million trips were recorded in Shanghai, reflecting an impressive 50 percent year-on-year increase, affirming the city's status as a premier holiday destination.
Starred hotels experienced a significant uptick in occupancy, reaching an average rate of 53 percent over the eight-day period. This marks a substantial 15 percentage points higher than the previous year, according to data released by the Shanghai Administration of Culture and Tourism.
The city played host to a diverse array of over 200 activities spanning eight categories, including captivating exhibitions, mesmerizing performances, and delightful culinary events. Notably, cultural venues like museums, art galleries, and theaters hosted exhibitions and performances, creating a rich cultural tapestry for both locals and visitors.
Shanghai's dining scene witnessed a notable resurgence, with total dining expenditure rising by 16.3 percent to 5.93 billion yuan. The combined offline and online consumption reached an impressive 56.9 billion yuan, underlining the city's appeal as a culinary hotspot.
Transportation statistics revealed the immense scale of movement, with China reporting nearly 2.3 billion trips across various modes. Train journeys reached 99.46 million, road trips exceeded 2.16 billion, water routes reached 9.41 million, and flights totaled 17.99 million.
UnionPay's payment data indicated a 21.6 percent increase in the total consumption of inbound visitors, soaring to 15.5 billion yuan during the holiday. Visitors from Jiangsu Province emerged as significant contributors, constituting one-fifth of the total tourism spending, as revealed by the Shanghai Commerce Commission.
